Description: EP.278 Return to school and testing plans With less than a week to go until the new school year, Korea’s education ministry is taking precautions to limit the spread of virus at schools amid the Omicron wave. The ministry said it would to provide self-test kits to students and school staff free of charge. It recommended all students test themselves twice a week. But the testing recommendations have triggered a heated debate among parents. Some argue regular testing would cause stress and pain to students, while others claim it is a necessary step in ensuring student safety in in-person learning. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss the back-to-school plans in Korea and elsewhere in the world. Cody Meissner, Professor of Pediatrics / Tufts University School of Medicine EP.278 등교 앞둔 학교...‘선제검사’권고 논란 학생들의 신학기 등교일이 코앞으로 다가왔다. 앞서 교육부는 오미크론 대유행에 따라 학교 방역을 학교 자체 체계로 전환하기로 했다. 유치원·초·중·고등학교 학생과 교직원에게 신속항원검사 키트를 제공하기로 하고, 등교 전 각각 주 2회, 주 1회씩 선제 검사를 받을 것을 적극적으로 권고했다. 감염을 최소화하는 '안전한 학교', 교육결손 문제를 해소하기 위한 '교육활동 정상화' 두 원칙에 입각해 등교 방안을 마련한 셈. 학부모들의 반응은 엇갈린다. 아이들이 고통스러워하고 제대로 된 검사를 할 수 없다는 의견과, 학력 저하가 심각하다며 정상적인 등교를 위해 선제적 검사가 대안이라는 의견이다. 방역 전문가들은 등교를 확대해야 하는 취지는 이해한다면서도 감염 최소화라는 목표는 달성하기 어려울 것으로 전망한다. 이미 일일 신규 확진자가 27만 명을 바라보고 있기 때문에 감염확률이 높은 대상자에게 집중적으로 검사를 하는 방식이 보다 효율적이라는 제언인데! 선제검사 권고를 통해 교육활동 정상화에 나선 정부의 시도는 성공을 거둘 수 있을지, 해외 사례 등을 통해 외신기자들과 이야기 나눠본다.
